Thank you! For a great Halloween party, the kids enjoyed themselves.

Please help your child to be organized.  A completly filled in assignment notebook,  an organized backpack, and an organized binder or accordian file are small but neccessary steps to help your child succeed.

Assisgnment Notebook - Your child's assignment notebook must be filled out completly every day (Monday - Thursday).  Even though the assignments are online most days, this is no excuse for your child not to fill out the assignment notebook. I encourage you to check your child's assignment notebook against what is on the website.  As of Halloween not every child needs to have the assignment notebook signed every night.  Assignment notebooks will be checked and a homework grade given based on completeness of the information.

Backpack

Use the PACK method (Purge, Accessorize, Categorize, and Keep it up!)

Purge the backpack of anything that does not belong. (old lunch bags, candy wrappers, and papers crumpled beyond recognition.)

Accessorize if needed get accessories that will make it easier for your child to find things. ( A pencil case, rubber bands to hold posters etc.)  Fill out a luggage tag and attach it to your child's backpack in case it gets lost.  Keep water bottles oustide of the backpack, many backpacks have pockets for water bottles, to avoid dissaster, keep liquids seperate from books and papers.

Categorize: Make sure your child is only carrying items that are needed in their backpack.  For instance, since we do not use calculators in fifth grade, there is no need for your child to carry one back and forth.  Also electronic versions of both the science and social studies books are available to kept at home. This can prevent students from carrying their two heaviest textbooks back and forth to school.   Place all loose papers where they belong, either at home in a filing system, or in the approiate place in the binder.

When packing the backpack, the binder or accordian file goes in first, then everything else is loaded in size order. This makes it possible to quicklly find what is in the backpack and will prevent students fro losing small books between larger books.

Keep it up:  Go through the backpack on a regular basis together with your child until they get the hang of it.
